BROOKLYN

When I woke I heard myself crying out. My chest heaved as I struggled to draw breath into my lungs and my heart jackknifed in my chest as tears fell down my face.

I forced myself to sit up, drew my knees to my chest and placed my forehead against them. The dream had been so real. The worst part was that I could see it happening in real life.

The past three days with Lila had been picture-perfect. We opened up to each other in new ways and enjoyed the simple things. Our kayaking trip two days before had been amazing. Lila’s determination to get from one end of the river to the other as fast as possible after asking Archie what the record was, something I’m sure he made up, had been cute to witness.

We’d even had lunch with Archie after, just to say thank you. When Lila had gone to the bathroom he told me that we looked good together and it had further boosted my confidence.

Yesterday had been another great day. We’d worked more, watched a couple of movies together, and taken our regular evening walk together. It’d been domestic bliss.

But all of that had unraveled after a single dream.

In it, I’d been accompanying Lila to one of the many charity events she attended. A few were for networking, but most were both financial and physical support for various causes. Lila didn’t just go to charity events hosted by the richest people. She often attended those by small NGOs genuinely trying to work on issues that weren’t as popular.

In my dream, one of Lila’s peers had sent me to get her something. Lila had informed the woman that I wasn’t her executive assistant anymore and that even if I was, no one was allowed to boss me around. The woman then made a comment about Lila needing to relax.

After Lila had looked at me determinedly, she informed the woman that we were actually a couple. The woman had burst out laughing and told Lila to stop joking. I’d fled the room after that and woken up soon after.

I reached for the glass of water I kept beside my bed and forced myself to take little sips. My throat was raw from all the emotion, and I hated the fact that I could very well see a scenario like that playing out.

I was nothing like the women Lila had dated. Even the ones who weren’t serious, Sutton included, were from a particular background. That wasn’t by Lila’s design. She simply moved in different circles now for work purposes and her charity endeavors.

I was way out of her league and would be embarrassed repeatedly.

I needed to get my mood back on track before breakfast, which Lila had promised to cook, so I got out of bed, changed into something warm, and settled onto the porch.

It was 4 o’clock on a Thursday and when I thought about who I could talk to one name came up. She answered after a few rings.
